- Location: Khao Sam Kloe lies in Cheow Lan Lake within Khao Sok National Park, in Surat Thani Province in southern Thailand. The rock formation is about 150 km northeast of Phuket, in the region’s mountainous interior.
- Accessibility: Khao Sam Kloe is accessible only by boat. Most trips depart from Ratchaprapha Pier near the dam. Many tours also pair the photo stop with a visit to a stalactite cave, such as Coral Cave.
- Unique Rock Formations: Three steep limestone pinnacles rise from the calm, emerald green water like natural towers. Their rugged, vegetation covered faces are mirrored in the still lake, creating an almost surreal, fairy tale atmosphere. Surrounded by dense jungle and other karst mountains, the scene feels remote and powerful, yet surprisingly peaceful.
- Origin of the Name: Khao Sam Kloe literally means “mountain of three close friends,” a reference to the three distinctive limestone rocks. In Thai, khao means mountain, sam means three, and kloe means close friends.
- Formation of the Karst Landscape: The striking limestone mountains around Cheow Lan Lake formed from sediments of an ancient tropical sea laid down hundreds of millions of years ago. Over time, the rock was uplifted and fractured, allowing rainwater to penetrate and slowly dissolve the limestone. This process created caves, sheer rock walls, and the region’s characteristic tower like karst peaks.
- Artificial Jungle Lake: The iconic panorama of limestone cliffs rising from the lake may look ancient, but it is surprisingly recent and has existed in its present form only since the 1980s. During that decade, the Ratchaprapha Dam was built in what is now Khao Sok National Park, flooding the valley and creating Cheow Lan Lake, which covers about 185 km².
- History of the Dam’s Construction: The Ratchaprapha Dam was built between 1982 and 1987 and was officially inaugurated on 30 September 1987. The 94 m high and 761 m long dam holds back the Khlong Saeng River and forms one of the largest water reservoirs in southern Thailand. The associated hydropower plant has a maximum capacity of 240 MW and, under optimal conditions, can supply electricity to about 300,000 households.
- Resettlement Program: The construction of the Ratchaprapha Dam required the relocation of 385 families from the surrounding area, as their homes later disappeared beneath the rising waters of the reservoir. They received financial compensation, new land for housing and agriculture, and support in developing new sources of income, including rubber cultivation and fishing.
- Floating Rafthouse Resorts: Floating rafthouse resorts are accommodations located directly on Cheow Lan Lake. The bungalows stand on securely anchored rafts or floating platforms, and their construction varies by operator, ranging from simple bamboo huts to modern structures built from durable materials. Direct access to the water and activities such as kayaking are typical features of these unique lodgings.

As the landscape gradually emerges from the mist and only the tips of the rock towers remain visible, an almost surreal scene appears that many visitors find especially captivating. To truly experience this atmosphere, however, it is necessary to stay overnight on the lake, since regular day tours from the pier usually depart only after sunrise and arrive too late.
- Khao Sok National Park: Khao Sok National Park, established in 1980, covers about 739 km² and is one of the most important protected areas in southern Thailand. The landscape is characterized by dense tropical rainforest, steep limestone formations, and the vast Cheow Lan Lake. The name combines khao, the Thai word for mountain, with Sok, which likely derives from a local place name.
- Fauna in the National Park: Khao Sok is one of the most biodiverse habitats in southern Thailand, yet many larger animals are difficult to spot because they are shy and tend to hide in the dense forest. Among the best known species are the Asian elephant, the Malayan sun bear, as well as gibbons and several hornbill species that are often heard before they are seen.
- Flora in the National Park: The rainforest of Khao Sok ranks among the most species rich ecosystems in Thailand and consists of evergreen giant trees, lianas, ferns, and dense undergrowth that form an almost continuous canopy. Particularly famous is the rare Rafflesia kerrii, which grows in the region and is one of the largest single flowers in the world. Its reddish brown, fleshy petals with pale spots can reach up to 80 cm in diameter, emit a carrion like odor to attract insects, and usually bloom for less than a week.
